AI Tools Usage

AI Tools Usage Policy

1. Introduction

Alamtara: Jurnal Komunikasi dan Penyiaran Islam recognizes the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in scholarly publishing. From improving language clarity to facilitating data analysis, AI tools can benefit authors and enhance productivity. However, their use must be carefully managed to uphold academic integrity, originality, transparency, and accountability.

This policy outlines the journal’s position on the ethical and responsible use of AI tools in manuscript preparation. It aims to provide clear boundaries, prevent misunderstandings, and align with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)’s Core Practices regarding AI in academic publishing.

2. Definition of AI Tools

For the purposes of this policy, AI tools refer to digital systems, platforms, or software that use artificial intelligence techniques—such as machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), and deep learning—to generate, analyze, translate, summarize, or modify textual, numerical, visual, or audio data in a research context. Examples include Generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude), writing/grammar assistants (e.g., Grammarly, DeepL Write, Quillbot), and AI-driven literature review or citation tools.

3. Acceptable and Restricted Uses of AI Tools

Permissible Uses:

  • Grammar checking, spelling, and punctuation correction.
  • Improving linguistic clarity, style, and tone in English or Indonesian prose.
  • Formatting references, citations, and initial literature discovery.
  • Supporting, but not replacing, statistical or qualitative data preparation.
  • AI Similarity Threshold: The maximum acceptable result for AI writing detection via Turnitin (or equivalent software) is 20%. Authors must revise their manuscripts prior to submission if the AI detection score exceeds this threshold.

Restricted Uses:

  • Generating entire manuscripts or substantial original content without human oversight.
  • Fabricating, falsifying, or manipulating empirical data, citations, or findings.
  • Automatically rephrasing published works in a manner that constitutes plagiarism.
  • Infringing on third-party copyrights or intellectual property.

4. Authorship and Responsibilities

AI tools cannot be credited as authors or co-authors. Authorship is strictly reserved for human researchers who contribute substantially to the conceptualization, design, execution, or interpretation of the research and can be held accountable for its content. Authors remain solely responsible for verifying the accuracy, factual validity, and originality of all AI-assisted content.

5. Disclosure Requirements

If AI tools were utilized beyond basic grammar checking, authors must include a dedicated statement section titled "Declaration of AI Tool Usage" prior to the References section, formatted as follows:

"During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [insert AI tool name, version, and developer] for [specify purpose]. All AI-assisted outputs were thoroughly reviewed and edited by the author(s) to ensure factual accuracy and academic compliance. The author(s) take full responsibility for the content of this manuscript."

6. Editorial Oversight and Non-Compliance

Alamtara does not make autonomous editorial decisions using AI tools; human editors and reviewers evaluate all submissions. Failure to disclose significant AI usage or exceeding the AI detection threshold may lead to manuscript rejection, post-publication retraction, or notification of the author's home institution in severe cases.
